Biosphere Deathprod - Stator (Touch)

In 1998, Biosphere and Deathprod, Geir Jenssen and Helge Sten respectively, Nordheim Transformed, a split album where both artists transformed the original experimental music of (fellow Norwegian) Anne Nordheim’s “Electric” (1974) almost beyond recognition. It’s not completely clear whether Jenssen and Sten actually worked together on this album – it’s a split, where different tracks are each credited to one of the two artists – but from its coherence it’s clear that they at least influenced each other greatly in producing this album. Nordheim Transformed is a landmark album in both artists’ catalogs, as well as for the ambient music genre in general.

Seventeen years later (and quite a lot of releases), Jenssen and Sten return to this split-album formula to release Stator, built on the same principles: each delivering individual tracks (three tracks contributed by Biosphere, and four tracks by Deathprod). This project that was commissioned by Tape to Zero for their…

A turning point album for me, purchased on vinyl in 1979…moving my musical tastes further from rock ‘n roll & towards experimental, avant-garde & eventually ambient.

I just cracked the surface of this…gritty, grimy & a little caustic – my kind of stuff!

a closer listen

SP016_Cover.inddFour years after Flare comes Flame, a sequel of sorts from Deaf Center’s Erik K. Skodvin, also known as Svarte Greiner.  Those familiar with the artist’s vast discography know to expect darkness, although the type of darkness varies with each moniker and each release.  This darkness is cast in light.

The bright orange cover may lead some to expect a blazing wildfire or factory conflagration.  But these pieces are subtle, concentrating on the flame itself: heat, light, flickering.  At no time does the music erupt.  The fire streams unnoticed through wires, behind walls, beneath embers that appear to be extinguished.  Should one experience the fullness of its awful power, one will already be too late to flee.

Accompanying Skodvin in this venture are Gareth Davis on clarinet and Anne Müller and Mika Posen on strings, none of whom are strangers to collaboration.  Their contributions lend the album a fuller sound…

Marsen Jules, The Empire of Silence

Listening to this now – beautifully constructed ambient/modern-classical pieces of drift…releases 30 March 2015.

Ten years after his debut-album “Herbstlaub“ on CCO, german ambient composer Marsen Jules takes us to his “Empire of Silence“. An impressing soundtrack to the epic power and beauty of nordic snow and ice-landscapes. Thereby he sounds even more elegiac, warm and romantic as ever before. This might be a result of a strict reduction to bittersweet symphonic string-sounds. Sounds which Jules elapses like a prism on the timeline and lets them meander on the slightly on the listeners eardrum. While others are still talking about “modern classic“, Jules is already moving on the particle-layer through the sound-continuum. Diving deeper into the sounds then ever before, he lets the frequencies mirror on the sound spectrum with an impressing precision.

A quiet mix inspired by Free Floating’s 2014 release, ‘Quiet Friend’s, a Tribute to Steve Roach’s Structures from Silence’. Chopped neatly into 3 segments for ease of access – cover artwork made via the Paper by Fifty Three iPad app (after the ‘Quiet Friends’ official project artwork).

This began as a rather short (50 minutes) mix – but grew as new music simply “arrived” via links, online reviews, net-label previews & casual listening…adding what are now the first 3 tracks as well as the mix’s closer.

01 Max Corbacho – Beyond Vaults
02 Dream Twice – Intro + Beneath the Grass
03 Oophoi/Paul Vnuk, Jr. – East Field, Helikum (excerpt)
04 Steve Roach – Structures From Silence (excerpt)
05 Christopher Sisk – 8_extended (excerpt)
06 Matthew VandenBrook – Breathe (excerpt)
07 Disturbed Earth – Breakwater
08 Simon Slater – Solace
09 Marsen Jules – Marsen Jules @ GRM, pt. 2 (excerpt)
10 Jack Hertz – Pillars of Silence
11 Fabio Keiner – Etude Zephyrienne
12 Mathieu Lamontagne – Pelle Poire
