Cellist GUILHERME RODRIGUES (Portugal, residing in Berlin) and guitarist DIRK SERRIES teamed up for a chamber music-esque session at the Sunny Side Inc. Studio (Anderlecht, Belgium). THE SAGE FLOWER is that collection of detailed interaction, acoustic outbursts and linear minimalism*. The album is released in a limited run of 100 copies on the prolific Creative Sources label from Portugal

Recorded, mixed and mastered at the Sunny Side Inc. Studio (Anderlecht, Belgium) on March 13th, 2022. Released on Creative Sources.

[My two cents: outbursts of din, overlapping stochastic bursts, oft-times caustic reverberation, musical janglings, danglings . . as well as occasional chords and even . . . notes!].
A podcast is forthcoming . . . as soon as I can wrap my head (and ears) around this latest flurry . . !

Arid Desert Flower | Avant-Garde/Ether-Jazz/Jazz/Noise | 79:19

Eclectic combinations of scratchy noise disguised as music (sometimes bordering on melody!); extraneous machinations and utterances never before heard via strings, woodwinds & reeds!

Predominantly sourced from A New Wave of Jazz’s recent (June ~ August) catalog releases, this also introduces works by Ensemble Ektòs, rand (rand will appear on September’s #ambient podcast as well) & Matthew Whiteside — which fit in perfectly with the avant-garde/experimental sound for which I was striving.
(the title & art were driven by one of the albums represented herein: The Sage Flower, by Guilherme Rodrigues & Dirk Serries).

A pleasure in the construction, I’ve watched (and listened) to the various iterations of A New Wave of Jazz over these past several years — and have tried to keep up with the innovation & improvisation presented with each new bundle of releases. I think that this podcast represents, thus far, the best I’ve heard to date. It stands upon the shoulders of previous compositions and yet, incredibly, inches forward & onward!
(and, btw, check out Martina Verhoeven’s whirl-wind piano-work on track 12!)

ISOLATED, by Various Artists (Ultimae)

12 Friday Aug 2022

This is a very nice V/A collection from Ultimae (a la D.J. Christian Samsara): ambient, mid-range techno/electronica & downtempo, dub-soaked beats! For me, personally, I get lost in the rhythms & tempos – listening via ear-buds especially when working out or running.

It balances the fine line of dreaminess & intentionally focused & engaging electronica; capturing the listening side of my brain so that the push-ups, pull-ups, crunches & stretching become easier (given that my brain is now otherwise occupied!)

I’m not posting this as audio — but I’ve remixed the tracks from slowest-to-fastest (see bottom of this page).

Thanks very much for another great V/A release, Ultimae!
Released last month (July).

Ultimae proudly presents “ISOLATED”, a various artists compilation selected by Danish DJ Christian Samsara with a definite ambient and cinematic downtempo spirit.

The 10 track story presents exquisite tracks by Christian Samsara, Martin Nonstatic, AES Dana, Erot, Lauge, Claudio PRC, Sonmi451, Miktek and newcomer to our realm, ASC.

It reveals remarkable nuance and depth of field, fuses intricate rhythmic patterns and atmospheric elements with evocative melodies conveying a gentle mesmerizing power. A feeling of wandering and softened yearning fills the air; isolation, according to Christian Samsara, heightens our senses and brings up a deeper resonance with music and nature.

Peripherie, by rand

You could write a review about this new release by rand and call it a piano & electronica album; or you could label it an ambient album, or a neo-classical fusion album; perhaps an experimental album or a soft-techno & glitch album; you could even label it a Jazz or an Ether-Jazz album . . .

. . . and, in every case, you’d be right!

I’m labeling it a predominantly Jazz-based album (think ECM) with crossover ventures into ALL of the areas delineated above. What it is . . . is a beautiful set of piano pieces with (mostly) beatless, techno machinations, clicks, pops, swells & whirs woven brilliantly & seamlessly throughout . . . skilled sonic architecture.

The piano playing reminds me of Raphael Loher (Kali Trio) or Lucca Fries (Hely) with a hint of Nik Bärtsch floating in the background. The electronics provide an ethereal skyline for the piano’s grounded-ness: soft & hard compositional frameworks accompanied by soft, to mid, to slightly harsh techno/electronic treatments.

It certainly represents a new direction in crossover-genre, fluidly Jazz-based experimental sound; with each track a new beginning within the adventure (we’ll explore their 2 previous EP’s, i & ii in a future post).

Standout tracks for me:
9.3, San Gimigano, Permanent Green, Siegfried 2.0

Rand (Frank Bogdanowitz & Jan Gerdes) deftly capture the listener’s aural attention (as well as their imagination) with the debut of Peripherie – out September 9th!

Tracks:

A1 – Hoola
A2 – Drangsal
A3 – 9.3.
A4 – Siegfried 2.0
B1 – Permanent Green
B2 – Blood Moon
B3 – San Gimignano

rand will appear on 2 upcoming A.L. podcasts: an Avant-Garde/Experimental Jazz show this Sunday evening (U.S. eastern time zone); and an Ambient show in mid- September.
