This is a great listen! We’ll be using 2 tracks from the album on upcoming ‘elements’ podcasts . . . ____________________________________________________________ An utterly unique guitar/bass/drums triad: the guitar sounds like anything but a guitar; bass and drums simultaneously insistent and relaxed. Telephathic group-think opens a window to fresh fields of fusion: funk-jazz heads, polyrhythmic skeletons, ambient pastorals, post-kraut drones and shimmering soundtrack reveries. A music of sustained tension and deep atmosphere, marked by subtle, shifting dynamics playing out in an open sound field.
“M” has a somewhat gritty, micro-granular feel to it. No raging beats here . . . simply subtle techno undertones slightly reminiscent of Plastikman’s ‘Consumed‘. Dr. Nojoke pivots & weaves through the micro-techno landscape with subtlety & nuance as he colors and shades the compositions with masterful DJ dexterity and electronic wizardry!.
It’s the perfect companion for your favorite pair of ear-buds/headphones. Highly recommended!
~Ambient Landscape, March 2024 ______________________________________________________________________ Dr.Nojoke’s EP “M” features four previously unreleased tracks from over 10 years ago, all of which share the initial letter M.
The 29-minute ride takes listeners through a diverse sonic landscape of associations, while maintaining the unmistakable essence of Dr.Nojoke’s signature style.
Of particular note is ‘Moimon‘, a blend of shamanic capoeira chants, drones, electro-techno beats and haunting bass that evokes the intensity of a hidden ritual. “Mustart” boasts a dark rhythmic drive with immersive textures and, like “Moimon”, has been tried and tested in countless performances by Dr.Nojoke in clubs around the world. Miliplex” and “Mumucu” reflect the deeper minimal-micro CLIKNO style synonymous with the Doctor.
Four tantalising treats for a five-star musical feast.
The artwork, an untitled assemblage by Edouard Tandjaoui, known for his visual work on Dr.Nojoke’s Berlin Gamelan album, adds a visual dimension to the sonic artistry.
My first album was ‘Holon‘ (2008/ECM). . . and I was hooked (line & sinker). What Nik & his Ronin: Sha (altosax, bass, and contrabass clarinets), Kaspar Rast (drums) & Jeremias Keller (bass); his Mobile: Sha (altosax, bass, and contrabass clarinets) & Nicolas Stocker (perkussion) perform musically is captivating in composition, beat, rhythmic groove and flow –great for both your automobile and via earbuds.
Track 1 is an ether/ambient ghost edit (a treated layer of the composition atop the original) we tinkered with for 2016’s ‘black elements‘ podcast.
