Thanks to Jesús Acevedo for reaching out via Twitter & making me aware of this recent release. Wonderfully ambient & experimental, with a touch of glitch. A track from this release will appear on an upcoming March podcast . . .

In a city plunged into an endless rainy night, aerial advertising bombards its inhabitants with the same idea: “Start a new life in Off-World”. What happened to those who were able to escape that nightmare? These chronicles may be the answer. “Off-World Chronicles” is a recording of ambient music with discreet cyberpunk touches. Abstract, contemplative… Very calm music, for difficult times.

Departing In Descent, by bvdub & James Bernard

Departing in Descent is the first collaboration between James Bernard and bvdub – though, unbeknownst to each other, their lives had traveled silently side-by-side for decades. Officially beginning, perhaps, with Brock’s purchase of James’ seminal Atmospherics in 1994 after it was mistakenly stocked in his local house record store, what was and always will be his favorite ambient album of all time connected, as abstractly as possible, two people whose journeys through both music and life had been running in secret parallel for as long as either had ever known.

From their lives as ravers deep in the underground, one in NY, one in SF, to years of personal and musical struggles that may as well been written by the same pen, their paths ran in tandem, unknowingly, for virtually their entire lives before one fateful night in LA found them in the same place at the same time – and it all became clear. What had happened. And what would happen as a result.

By #Ambient . . .

. . . we mean slightly caustic, granular grit, replete w/ atmospheric & audiological tension that creates a sonic charge which reverberates across one’s cranial lobe —

producing a naturally occurring endorphin effect.

Terrain, by Joachim Spieth

With ‘Terrain,’ Joachim Spieth presents the fourth long player on his Affin imprint.
The follow-up album to ‘Ousia’ (2021), ‘Terrain,’ reflects on the human relationship with nature. The album title is a reference to a musical language that layers Spieth’s music production practices and intimacy with nature.
‘Terrain’ was forged in deep solitude.“ It’s an interplay of euphoric flashes and introspection” – says Spieth.

The eight compositions take the listener into a captivating cascade of sonic textures resembling internal states fluctuations and emotional release. The tension between the organic warmth and static curves broads tones into liquified roars and empty spaces.

Unlike Spieth’s previous albums, ‘Terrain’ holds more intimate gestures and emotional sensibility. Soothing frequencies here are intended to create a state of awareness in the listener. It is a work of conceptual and emotional beauty, evoking a form of spatial imagery that is as grounding as elevating.

Affirmation, Arild Andersen Group

Affirmation, on ECM

Norwegian bassist Arild Andersen, an ECM musician for more than fifty years, is a masterful player who has always welcomed a challenge. His first recording with his new quartet – including rising stars Marius Neset and Helge Lien (both bandleaders in their own right)– is almost entirely improvised. The players make the leap of faith together and find and develop forms in the moment, an object lesson in spontaneous group creativity. Affirmation was recorded in November 2021 at Oslo’s Rainbow Studio.

Andersen’s bass sets ideas in motion from the first moment of “Affirmation Part I”, ideas soon embellished by Lien’s rippling piano and Mjåset Johansen’s gentle splashes of cymbal colour. When Marius Neset enters, initially to meditate on an iterative motif, Arild envelops it in an almost orchestral embrace, first with bowed bass then briefly with his pedal-generated sounds, blending acoustic and electronic timbres.

The music keeps unfolding.
